Spirit

Spirit as an element is a concept that you may or may not have encountered before, either way it is a fundamental concept within the Craft. For if we do not command and rule over the elements then how can we practice and perform Magik with them.

You can not mould, change and manipulate matter, circumstance and outcome if you do not create it in the first place. It is for this reason that Spirit is of such importance to the Witch as it is through Spirit that Magik works. To the Witch the universe has an existential nature, that is to say (we think therefore it is). In other words everything in the physical realm is only as it is because we think it to be so. It then follows that if we decide that something in this physical realm needs to change all we need do to change it is to think of it as changed and it will be so. Now this of course is a massive over simplification of the universe, Magik and the performing of it. But it is a very important part of the understanding of Spirit and its role within the Craft.

Spirit, Soul or any other name you may chose to give it, is the eternal aspect of our existence and as such may simply be defined as the real you. It is often said that we are human beings on a spiritual journey, but in the Craft we know that the truth is that we are spiritual beings on a human journey. We are quite literally the beings that by wishing it into place created the universe and the entire physical realm, a realm that we now inhabit as human beings in a physical sense. But behind every physical person there is a spiritual being and that being is a creator of the all that is apart of this physical realm. So at the risk of repeating myself, as a creator of the universe you have the ability to change it in any way you may feel you need to. Now as you learn your Craft I’m sure you will learn to exercise good judgement as to when to change things and when not to do so. But always remember that nothing is beyond your abilities but it may be beyond what you are willing to do for any number of reasons.

So as a spiritual being you are immensely powerful and one aspect of the power that we all posses is that we rule the elements and they serve us not the other way around. So it is for this reason that spirit is always depicted as above or ruling over the other four elements. Now there many attributes that the element of Spirit possesses that we could discuss and fill pages with. But if I told you everything you needed to know, you would not have to study at all so again I say Knowledge gained to easily is never valued.
